How much sleep do you take in a day? Some people feel fresh even after taking 5 to 6 hours but some need up to 8 hours of sleep and some people require more than 8 hours sleep.

Duration of sleep is important but sleep cycle varies from person to person. Taking complete rest is crucial for your physical and mental health but it is often neglected by people.

Another important thing about sleep is the position in which you sleep and it is as crucial as your sleep cycle is. For example, sleeping for 8 hours might be good for your health but sleeping on your stomach isn’t good.

Sleeping position is important because you remain in that position for a long time like 5 hours or more. And if the position isn’t supportive, it would put unnecessary pressure on your spine or vital organs.

Let’s start the discussion with bad sleeping positions

  1. Upside down

Also called sleeping on your stomach, this position curls up the spine. Sleeping in this position could cause deformities especially on the neck area.

  1. Circular position

It is like sleeping in mother’s womb. Babies remain in this position for 9 months but it isn’t a good position for sleeping. It is called fetal position and it puts a lot of stress on the lower spine.

  1. One sided

It is safer than the other two positions but it also some disadvantages. Sleeping on your side would keep your spinal cord safe but it could create issues with blood circulation. Also, the vital organs like heart and liver could come under pressure depending on the sleeping position.

But there is little to worry about your sleeping position because making simple changes can make it safe.

  1. Keep a pillow between your knees to reduce stress on spine. The pillow would align your hipsand, in this way, relax the spine.
  1. Raise your knees with a pillow while sleeping on your back but don’t try this if you have sleep apnea.
  1. Try changing your sleeping position, if you sleep on your back. For example, you can turn to sides and change the sides as well to keep it safe.
  1. If you avoid remaining in one position for a long time throughout the day, you can change your sleeping positions as well. In this way, you can maintain a good sleeping posture.
